Well, we've covered 1979 rather extensively, so why don't we wind it back to 1978? Here's a sampling of the kind of music you would have heard if you were lucky enough to live near a great FM radio station - WBCN in Boston, WPLJ in New York, WMMS in Cleveland, WLUP in Chicago and more...
There was definitely a shift in '78, as the Gen Jonesers (1959-1964) came into their own and wanted their own music, not just their older siblings' hand-me-downs. To me, the Jonesers were the coolest cohort ever - tough, smart, cool, funny, sexy, free. The Boomers were too arrogant and self-righteous and cringe -- and we Xers were a bit too fractured by broken families and diminishing opportunities -- but the GJs really benefited from that Cindarella-zone sweet-spot.
So once this heatwave breaks, bust out the grill and the chaise and let these glorious bursts of life and noise fill your soul and fuel your spirit.
And my GenX peeps get some love over at the Extension School. Click here to soak it up.
