The Fire Still Burns

I've been remiss in updating this blog- The Secret Sun has been taking up a lot of my free time and there's been a bit of a lull on the book end. But things are starting to heat up again, so I will be posting here more often. I've got some new pieces on my favorite albums coming up which will offer up some context behind the inspiration of the book. In the meantime, here's an interview that I'm very jazzed about and I think you will be too.

Any time I'm talking with William Henry is a good time. He came out loaded for bear and we really get down to it. There's more information in this half-hour than in some two hour interviews I've done.

We go beyond the ostensible pretext of The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll and dive headfirst into Obama the Hindu Avatar and the psychic roots of political theater and ritual. And it all ties into the issues raised in the book- this is all a continuum, not a sampler of disparate, disconnected elements. Here's Williams pitch:
There is an incredible connection between rock and roll and ancient secrets, and Chris Knowles understands it. Ancient mythology and shamanism influenced modern rock to an unbelievable extent. Many rockers are shamen, and cults like vodoun and druidism, which are integrated into rock mythology, are remnants of ancient Egyptian religion. Chris Knowles says, "This is not an accidental process," as he relates rock iconography to symbols that date back even beyond Egypt and into the stone age.

It's time well spent, I guarantee you.

Talking Rock on the Truth Brigade

Here's another gabfest, this time talking The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll on The Truth Brigade. Again, lots of new material is covered including the decline and fall of Classic Rock, the corporate colonization of music, the grooming of pop puppets, the dark side of the Sixties and so much more. Two hours.

A Secret History of Heavy Metal

Up now on the Daily Grail:

It's not a shocking new revelation to compare rock 'n' roll to ancient pagan rituals. Writers have been throwing the term "Dionysian" around since Elvis first showed that a white man could sing the blues. But as I discovered while writing my new book, The Secret History of Rock 'n Roll, the parallels go much, much deeper than that. So much so that if you strip away the surface details (and get past the whole sacred/secular dichotomy), the similarities between the ancient Mystery religions and modern rock 'n' roll can be downright mind-blowing.

Never mind that old pagan place-names like the Apollo, the Orpheum, the Palladium and the Academy are still used for concert halls, or that rock's Olympians (U2, Springsteen, Bon Jovi, etc.) still act out their dramas in "arenas" and "coliseums." The ancient world had its own guitar heroes, its own pop divas, even its own heavy metal bands and headbangers...

Holy Rollin' and Rockin' (and Spiritual Warfarin')

Back to the future- I write about the Pentecostal movement in The Secret History of Rock 'n' Roll, and how it ties back to the ancient Dionysian Mysteries in ways that its followers would never dare to admit. But it is by far the fastest-growing denomination in Christianity, and may be the fastest-growing religion in the world. It's spreading like wildfire all across the developing world.

But few people are familiar with it. Secular people hear that Pentecostalism is exploding all across the world and think it's just another kind of Evangelicalism. These videos are typical of Pentecostal services and will disabuse outsiders of any illusions as to what is going on in those nondescript buildings you see sprouting up in urban and industrial neighborhoods.

Evangelicalism as we've understood it is dying, only more slowly than the old liturgical churches. The mainline Protestant churches are dead, they just haven't been buried yet. The Catholic Church has been mortally wounded by its own transgressions, it's just that most people are too embarrassed to point out the gaping chest wound behind the vestments.

When your grandchildren hear the word Christian, it will be exactly what we see in these videos that they will picture
, if indeed they picture anything at all. There is no doubt in my mind that the rise of Pentecostalism is forcing legions of moderate Evangelicals away from Protestantism, maybe even away from religion itself. As exhilarating as it may be for its followers, it's anathema to more besides, especially those in the educated classes.

Most importantly when you read conspiracy literature, and stories about "spiritual warfare" with demonic cabals, be very aware that this is the precise environment from which it all is springing. These are the faces behind those stories. This is what they believe and this is how they practice their faith. I'm not going to editorialize here, I just want the facts to be known.

You can't separate the apocalyptic worldview of religious conspiracy theory from the culture from which it has sprung. They know that they are the future of Christianity, and they are the future of Christianity as a globalizing force. Again, no editorializing here. Just the facts.

But no one will be able to say they can't rock and roll.
